How many words in a 3-minute talk? (calculator)
If you have written a script, the question is whether it fits the slot. At a comfortable 140 words a minute, three minutes is about 420 words. This calculator does the arithmetic, and shows the range so you can plan for a slower delivery.
Aim for
420words
Range at a normal pace: 390–480 words. Leave 15% spare for questions, slides and nerves.
Reading a script aloud runs faster than speaking from notes. If you plan to read, use the lower number.
The numbers behind it
A comfortable meeting pace is 130–160 words a minute. At 130, three minutes is 390 words; at 160, it is 480. Plan for the lower end: nerves and questions always eat time.
Reading a script aloud is faster than speaking it. If you are presenting from notes rather than reading, assume the lower number and leave 15% unused.
What to cut first
Cut the warm-up (“So, I just wanted to quickly…”) and the restatement at the end. Then cut adjectives that do not change the meaning. Most first drafts lose 20% without losing an idea.
